PAP Teeth Whitening vs Peroxide: What’s the Difference?
Share
PAP and peroxide are different whitening ingredients used in at-home teeth-whitening products. Understanding the formulation matters because two products can look similar while using very different active ingredients.
This guide explains what PAP is, how it differs from peroxide, which Luxsmile products use each approach, and the practical factors to consider before choosing a routine.
What is PAP teeth whitening?
PAP stands for Phthalimidoperoxycaproic Acid. It is the whitening ingredient used in Luxsmile's peroxide-free PAP range.
Current Luxsmile PAP products include:
- PAP Whitening Strips — 28 Strips
- PAP Colour Correcting Whitening Strips — 28 Strips
- PAP LED Whitening Kit
- Essential PAP+ Whitening Kit
- Premium Dual-Light PAP+ Whitening Kit
Is PAP peroxide-free?
Yes. PAP is a different whitening ingredient from hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. When Luxsmile describes a product as PAP and peroxide-free, the whitening formulation is based on PAP rather than peroxide.
Which Luxsmile products contain peroxide?
Current Luxsmile peroxide-based products include:
- Precision Whitening Pen
- Teeth Whitening Pens Duo Pack
- Rapid LED Whitening Kit
- Essential Peroxide Whitening Kit
- Premium Dual-Light Peroxide Whitening Kit
Always follow the product-specific ingredients and directions. Do not apply directions from one product to another simply because both contain a whitening ingredient.
PAP vs peroxide: which should I choose?
There is no single format that suits everyone. The decision is usually about formulation preference, treatment style and personal suitability.
Choose a PAP option if you specifically want a peroxide-free whitening routine. Choose a peroxide-based product if you prefer that formulation and it is suitable for you. Results vary from person to person with any whitening method.
PAP and sensitive teeth
Some customers look for peroxide-free options because sensitivity is a concern. A peroxide-free formulation may suit that preference, but it should not be treated as a guarantee that sensitivity or irritation can never occur.
If you already have sensitive teeth, read our guide to teeth whitening and sensitive teeth before choosing a routine.
PAP strips vs PAP LED
Both formats use PAP, but the routine is different. Strips hold the formulation against the teeth using flexible upper-and-lower strips, while the PAP LED Kit uses whitening gel with a rechargeable mouthpiece.
The newer Essential and Premium kit ranges are also available in PAP+ and peroxide formulations. Essential provides a straightforward LED option, while Premium adds a dual blue/red light device.

Where does purple colour correction fit in?
Purple colour correction is not the same as whitening or bleaching. Purple pigments can temporarily help neutralise the appearance of yellow tones through colour contrast.
Luxsmile offers the Purple Colour Corrector as a temporary cosmetic treatment, while the PAP Colour Correcting Whitening Strips combine PAP whitening with purple pigments.

What about Brightening Powder?
Luxsmile Weekly Teeth Brightening Powder is used once weekly as directed. It is not presented as a PAP or peroxide whitening treatment.
Safety points for every whitening routine
- Use only as directed and do not exceed the stated treatment time or frequency.
- Do not combine whitening treatments in the same session.
- Avoid unnecessary contact between whitening gel and the gums.
- Remember that crowns, veneers, fillings and other restorations may not change colour like natural teeth.
- Stop use if irritation is significant or persistent.
- Ask a dentist before use if you have sensitive teeth, gum problems, untreated dental issues or uncertainty about suitability.
Luxsmile whitening products are intended for adults aged 18 and over and are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Read Product Safety before use.
